Douglas the Blue Heron

There's something about Blue Herons.  They're just so cool.  They make me think of pterodactyls.

What sound does a blue heron make, I wonder?  In reality I think blue herons are pretty quiet, but in my imagination, they have high-pitched, screeching voices that would echo across our cornfield and bounce back from the treeline.  I love to watch their stealthy steps as they stalk minnows and listen for the telltale swish of an unwary fin.

I agree...
They (and many birds like them) remind me of of "pterodactyls." I really like that word and had to work it into a sentence. Anyway, same thing for Egrets...

Ha, I was wondering if anyone would think anything of his name! I guess he's been a regular patron of our pond for a couple of years; my husband's family named him.

I have no idea the significance behind it -- I'd wager there isn't any. I'd have named him Foghorn Leghorn, but that's just me.
